Tournament Update History
The SFB tournament ship designs are slowly evolving year by year. The
original eleven tournament ships were published in Captain's Log
#6 in 1988. These were remarkably similar to the current
tournament ships, but with some notable differences:
| 1988 Tournament Cruisers versus 1998 |
| Federation: | (as current) |
| Klingon D-7CT: | (no ADD and no special drone pts) |
| Romulan TFH: | (as current) |
| Kzinti TCC: | (as current) |
| Tholian T-NCA: | (Neo-Tholian -- as current but no web
fist option) |
| Orion T-BR: | (no LS/RS PH-3's, allowed 2 PH-G's) |
| Hydran TLM: | (no PH-1-360) |
| Andromedan Krait: | (no Cargo, Lab, or Aux) |
| Lyran TCC: | (no UIM) |
| WYN AxBC:
| (had two option packages, no local requirement) |
| ISC TC: | (only four LS/RS PH-3's instead of six) |
Since then new TC's were introduced and these tournament cruisers were
slowly changed to reflect the current pattern of wins in the
tournament. In general, the overall win/loss record of a ship in some
set of sanctioned tournaments was looked at, and if it was much less
than 50% then it was upgraded. If it was much larger then it was
restricted. A history of the updates follows:
-
1991: Tournament Book
- The TC's were all updated to the Captain's (i.e. Doomsday)
edition at this time. A short 16-page ``Tournament Book'' was
released outlining the changes (the predecessor to Module T).
Klingon: Added ADD and 2 drone points.
Andro Updated PA rules. Added 4 Cargo, 2 Lab, 2 Aux.
WYN AxBC: Removed the option package choice.
-
Early 1993: Module T
- This is when the full 64-page module was introduced, with four
new TC's plus advice on running a tournament, alternate
(non-sanctioned) tourney formats, plus F&E and PD tournament
material. It also introduced a two changes:
Andro: Added PA mine option.
WYN AxBC: Required 1 `local' weapon
New Tournament Cruisers:
| Romulan TKE: | (5 armor, no LS/RS PH-3's) |
| Romulan TKR: | (only 2 APR and no wing PH-3's) |
| Archeo-Tholian: | (as current except 4-6 breakdown) |
| LDR `Red Tiger' | (as current Lyran Tiger, but trades
4xPH-1+2xPH-3 for two LS/RS PH-G's) |
Clearly the Red Tiger was not a very popular choice!
-
1993: Captain's Log #15
- This added three more new TC's for playtesting. These were
allowed in sanctioned tournaments only for 1994, and fully
approved as of 1 January 1995. It also introduced a short-lived
special case rule:
Orion: Introduced a special phaser damage rule, which was
quickly abolished in favor of limiting the Orion to one PH-G
New Tournament Cruisers:
| WYN Black Shark: | (as current except no drone pts) |
| LDR `Red Jaguar' | (as current but only 4 APR) |
| Seltorian: | (as current but only 30 warp) |
-
Late 1994: Captain's Log #16
- Several changes were introduced to balance the new ships. The
Orion phaser restriction was actually changed between Origins and
GenCon of 1994, and reconfirmed here.
Rom TKE: Added 5 armor (for total 10).
A-Thol: had its breakdown changed to 5-6 (instead of 4-6).
Orion: limit of 1 PH-G confirmed, phaser damage rule
abolished.
WYN Shark: Given two drone points.
LDR: The Red Jaguar had 2 APR added and replaced the Red
Tiger.
Seltorian: added 2 center warp.
-
June 1996: Official Update
- An short insert was added to all copies Module T around this time
with the revised SSD's. Some additional changes were also
approved.
Hydran: Given a single PH-1-360.
ISC: Given 2 PH-3's with LS/RS arcs (for total 6).
WYN AxBC: Required to have two `local' weapons instead of
just one.
-
August 1997: Official Update
- An update was issued on the official e-mailing lists and in the
newsletter (SFT) announcing three changes...
Rom TKE: added 2 LS/RS PH-3's.
Rom TKR: added 2 APR and 2 wing PH-3's.
Seltorian: added 2 PH-1's with FA+L/R arcs.
-
November 1997: Official Update
- The extra Seltorian phasers were cancelled by a general
announcement, reverting to 8 PH-1's (but still 32 warp).
-
April 1, 1999: Official BBS Post
- An official change to the Andromedan Krait was announced:
deleting the PA mine option, 2 cargo, 2 AWR, and converting the
other AWR to APR. This change will be required for all
tournaments after June 1, 1999.
-
April 5, 1999: Official BBS Post
- An official change to the Seltorian TCA was announced: adding
one WB. This change will be required for all tournaments after
June 1, 1999.
-
Jan 3, 2000: Official BBS Post
- No official changes to the TCs, but several potential changes
were announced for playtest: downgrades to the TKR, Archeo-Tholian,
and WYN Shark, upgrades to the TKE, Lyran, and Neo-Tholian.
-
March 1, 2000: Official BBS Post
- Official changes to TC's based on playtest reports of a set of
potential changes posted on Jan 3, 2000. The following ships
were changed:
Romulan TKR: Remove one APR from deckhouse.
Romulan TKE: Add 2 lab, 2 tran, 1 battery, 1 flag.
Neo-Tholian T-NCA: Add 2 impulse.
Archeo-Tholian TCA: Remove one battery, no changes to shields.
Lyran: Change the two phaser-3s to 360, no changes to shields.
-
July 18, 2000: Official Website Announcement
- The tournament downloads page contains the statement
"(NOTE: The Andromedan has been suspended indefinitely from all
tournament play effective 18 July 2000.)"
There are a lot of conflicting opinions on the justification for these
changes. I am not taking an opinion here, just presenting the facts.
If you want to see how these line up, you can check out my charts
shown on the Tournament Advice Page.
