New Fighters

This is a collection of new ideas for fighters in SFB, including a bunch of new designs. Fighters have the advantage of being simple to use in play, plus they have not been proliferated nearly as much as ships have. Perhaps an advanced fighter product could be made, with more all-fighter scenarios. Below are some ideas:

New Fighter Rules

This summarizes the new rules for fighters of a variety of types. Rules for fighters are scattered among various places, with tons of exceptions and erratta. Note that rules (R1.F7) to (R1.F9) in Module J page 26 are not ship descriptions, but rather general rules which apply to fighters of all races.

FIGHTER RAIL TYPES:

High-speed Fighters may have base speeds of greater than 15. In this case, warp booster packs raise their speed to a maximum of 30 rather than doubling it.

Discretionary Power (DISC): for fighters is similar to reserve power used by ships, and can be used at any time during the turn. It is abbreviated ``DISC''. One point of discretionary power can block one point damage, or can act as one point of negative tractor power, or can add one point of EW. A fighter is limited to 6 combined ECM/ECCM, but discretionary power can override its built-in EW points (say to allow it 6 ECCM and no ECM).

Fighter-Bombers: are three-space heavy shuttles. By default, they can launch up to 4 drones per turn, and have two discretionary power (abbreviated as 2 DISC). Typical stats are: Speed 18-24, Damage Points 18-24, Phasers: 2xPh-G, Weapons: 4xPHOT, BPV 24-28.

Bombers: are four-space heavy shuttles. By default, they can launch up to 6 drones per turn and have 4 points of discretionary power (4 DISC). Typical stats are: Speed 10-15, Damage Points 26-30, BPV 32-36.

NOTE: Fighter-bombers and Bombers were introduced as new simulator units in Star Fleet Times #14, based on a proposal by John Hall.

X-fighter Shields: The Forward Shield protects the FH arc and the Rear Shield protects the RH arc (like Interceptors and PA Panels). Damage against a fighter with Warp Booster Packs is not doubled until the protecting shield is destroyed. Any points penetrating the shield are doubled.

Early Years Fighters

SSD (GIF format)

Early Years fighters do not control their own drones. All "EY" Fighter launched drones must be controlled by "Friendly" ships. This rule is general but works....the "EY" Fighters mothership can control a number of "EY" Fighter launched drones equal to its current Sensor rating, any other "Friendly" ship can control a number of "EY" fighter launched drones equal to 1/2 of its current sensor rating.

When an ``EY'' Fighter performs any action; firing a Phaser, launching a Drone, deplaying a Chaff Pack, or launching a Torpedo, it must roll 1 die and consult the following chart:

1-5 System functions normally
6 System malfunctions: roll an additional 1d6 to
determine the number of impulses before the system
may be attempted to be used again.

Native Lyran Fighters

These are fighters built by the Lyrans themselves, which are armed primarily with disruptors rather than drones. The L-O is an ``Early Years'' fighter, subject to the malfunction rules above and lacking drone control.

Native Gorn Heavy Fighters

The new R-series Gorn fighters were exclusively two-space fighters, using Gorn pilots rather than hired mercernaries. Originally planned for release at the end of Y174, the designs suffered many pitfalls and some took into Y176 to release.

Federation Stealth Fighters

SSD (GIF format)

These are advanced but not X-technology fighters. They use all the normal fighter rules.

The stealth bonus they have is in addition to the normal fighter EW bonuses. All of these have internal bays similar to that carried by the F-111. See the rules above for details.

Fed X-Fighters

SSD (GIF format)

These have multi-space X-rails (as described above). Each drone rail is listed with a number indicated the spaces of drones it can hold: any combination of drone types can be fitted to the particular rail as long as they did not exceed that particular rail's space restriction. RALAD's count as half-space drones.

These X-fighters also have FH/RH shields like Interceptors. Damage against a fighter with Warp Booster Packs is not doubled until the protecting shield is destroyed. Any points penetrating the shield are doubled.

New Firing Arcs:

    XR = Extended Right = LF + RF + R + RR + LR
    XL = Extended Left  = RF + LF + L + LR + RR
X-fighters can launch X-drones: i.e. type-VII, type-VIII, and type-IX. The phasers cannot be overloaded and thus act as normal phasers. The A-12 may only launch 2 Photon Torpedoes per turn. There must be a 8 impulse delay between the firing.
