Border Incident

by Liam McCauley
Y171

In Y171, there is great tension along the Romulan / Federation border. Both sides patrol the area and small skirmishes are not uncommon. Often, the larger and more modern ships are needed more urgently elsewhere. This results in patrol groups being made up of a mix of, often ageing, ships.

This scenario describes an incident between two such forces: Federation Light Cruisers led by one of the New designs, and Romulan Warbirds led by a Sparrowhawk cruiser.

Both sides detect each other pretty much simultaneously and close to attack. Thus, both sides are at WS III.

The victory conditions are not standard. Each player has unique objectives, although they can be divided into two: the squadron commanders who want their whole force to do well, and the individual captains who are trying to improve their own reputations.

The scenario was designed for 6 players: 2 squadron commanders, and 4 captains. It is not really practical to play with less, but if more are used, then the victory points for the squadron commanders will have to be adjusted as follows:

           | Internal | Disengaged | Crippled | Destroyed | Captured
-----------|----------|------------|----------|-----------|----------
Squad Cmdr | +12/n | +30/n | +60/n | +120/n | +240/n
Other Ship | +10/n | +24/n | +50/n | +100/n | +200/n
where n is the number of ships under squadron commanders command (not including his own).

Federation New Light Cruiser Captain

You were awarded Captaincy of one of the New Light Cruisers designed to replace the ageing Light Cruisers. With tensions mounting along the border, you have been assigned a squadron to patrol aggressively. The other captains seem to be jealous of your command, and a bit resentful. Probably because they were passed over when commands were being assigned for the new cruisers. You must exert your authority, and get them to work as a team. Don't let their petty rivalries interfere with the mission.

Your sensors pick up the telltale signals of warp engines and you immediately order the other ships to Battle Stations. This is your chance to show Starfleet that you are a capable leader, and can keep your squadron under your command. Remember, the overall result is more important than individual kills. Your sensor operator informs you that he has identified the bogeys as two War Eagles and a new Sparrowhawk cruiser. Federation would indeed be impressed if you managed to beat one of them.

Victory Points are scored depending on the damage done by your squadron as follows:

            | Internal | Disengaged | Crippled | Destroyed | Captured
------------|----------|------------|----------|-----------|----------
Sparrowhawk | +6 | +15 | +30 | +60 | +120
War Eagle | +5 | +12 | +25 | +50 | +100
Subtract the vicory points of Romulan squadron leader from your total to get the final figure.

Federation Light Cruiser Player

You have been the proud Captain of a Federation Light Cruiser for many years, being involved in plenty of scraps with Klingons, pirates and Romulans. Recently, with tensions mounting along the border, you have been assigned patrol duty in a squadron under the command of another captain. This upstart, barely out of the academy, flies one of the new light cruisers. You would give your eye teeth to command one of those beauties.

Your sensors pick up the telltale signals of warp engines as the squadron commander hails you and orders Battle Stations. This is your chance to show that hard fought experience counts for more than good grades, and that you should be Squadron Commander. Your sensor operator informs you that he has identified the bogeys as two Romulan War Eagles, and one of the brand new Sparrowhawk cruisers. If you managed to nail one of them, Starfleet would surely reward you with command of a new light cruiser.

Victory Points are scored depending on the damage done by/to you as follows:

            | Internal | Disengaged | Crippled | Destroyed | Captured
------------|----------|------------|----------|-----------|----------
Sparrowhawk | +14 | +35 | +70 | +140 | +280
War Eagle | +8 | +20 | +40 | +80 | +160
Own Ship | -10 | -25 | -50 | -100 | -200

Romulan Sparrowhawk Captain

You were awarded Captaincy of one of the brand new Sparrowhawk Cruisers designed to replace the ageing War Eagles. With tensions mounting along the border, you have been assigned a squadron to patrol aggressively. The older captains seem to be set in their ways and bear you some resentment.

This is your chance to show High Command that you are a capable leader, and can keep your squadron under your command. Remember, the overall result is more important than individual kills. Your sensor operator informs you that he has identified the bogeys as two old Federation light cruisers and one new design. High Command would indeed be impressed if you managed to beat one of them.

Victory Points are scored depending on the damage done by your squadron as follows:

          | Internal | Disengaged | Crippled | Destroyed | Captured
----------|----------|------------|----------|-----------|----------
   NCL | +6 | +15 | +30 | +60 | +120
CL (Old) | +5 | +12 | +25 | +50 | +100
Subtract vicory points of Federation squadron leader from your total to get the final figure.

Romulan War Eagle Captain

You have been the proud Captain of a Romulan War Eagle for many years. You love to operate alone, hunting the enemies of the Empire, destroying them with the awesome power of your plasma torpedo, then slinking away under cover of cloak. Recently, with tensions mounting along the border, you have been assigned patrol duty in a squadron under the command of another captain. This upstart flies one of the new light cruisers, which doesn't even have a decent sized plasma.

Your sensors pick up the telltale signals of warp engines as the squadron commander hails you and orders Battle Stations. This is your chance to show that the old War Eagle is still the best cruiser is the Imperial Romulan Navy, and that you should be Squadron Commander. Your sensor operator informs you that he has identified the bogeys as three Federation light cruisers. One of them seems to be the new design that only came into service last year. High Command would indeed be impressed if you managed to beat one of them.

Victory Points are scored depending on the damage done by/to you as follows:

          | Internal | Disengaged | Crippled | Destroyed | Captured
----------|----------|------------|----------|-----------|----------
   NCL | +14 | +35 | +70 | +140 | +280
 CL (Old) | +8 | +20 | +40 | +80 | +160
 Own Ship | -10 | -25 | -50 | -100 | -200
