The R-Series Modules: New Ships

These modules add new ships for existing races. What each modules consists of is a ``rules'' book which has text descriptions of the ships, charts summarizing information on these ships, and a book with a whole bunch of new SSD's.

Module R1 (Bases and Auxiliaries)

This module has the text rules/description and SSD's for bases and auxiliaries of all races. Each race gets an SSD for its own Starbase, Base Station, Battle Station, Monitors, Small Auxiliary PF Tender, and Large Auxiliary PF Tender. (Exception: Orions and WYN only get a BS and a BATS.)

Other general units include:

Note that many of the SSD's included in this module are simply graphical writing out of what is already described in the Basic and Advanced Rules. There is a basic template for a Starbase, and the only difference between the Klingon and the Federation Starbase is that they have different weapons in certain mounts.

Much of the text space is taken up by a collected set of Addenda for the original Doomsday supplements: C1-C2, J, K, R1-R4. However, later supplements such as C3, R5, and R6 are not included in the charts here. The complete Addenda is now available as a separate product, Module G1, making the Addenda in Module R1 obselete.

Module R2 (Federation, Kzinti, Orion, and Andromedan)

This include ship descriptions and SSD's for 40 Federation ships, 30 Kzinti ships, 10 Orion ships, and 4 Andromedans. Plus nine scenarios.

A few new classes are introduced which should be explained. A Space Control Ship is generally a dreadnaught variant which has 12 fighters and 6 PF's (or heavy fighters in the case of the Federation).

There are also a number of ``standard'' variants of basic hulls. Scouts exchange heavy weapons for special sensors. Escorts exhange heavy weapons for phasers and ADD's. Leaders add a little shields, power, and weapons. Survey Cruisers replace weapons with a mixture of special sensors, extra shuttles, and cargo. Minesweepers replace weapons with mine racks, and beef up the forward sheild. Drone variants replace heavy weapons with drone racks. Carrier variants have fighters, and are generally marked with a ``V'' (that is, the War Destroyer Carrier is the DWV).

Light Tactical Transports (LTT) are a special variant of War Cruisers -- they have cargo and can carry pods like Tugs.

Module R4 (Romulan, Gorn, Tholian, ISC)

More ship descriptions and SSD's. 35 Romulan ships (including the RoyalHawk, FlameHawk Heavy Mauler, ROC Dreadnaught, Phoenix Space Control Ship, and the Snipe-E escort). 20 Gorn ships (including the HDV Carrier, BCH Heavy Battlecruiser, and the Battle PF Tender). 9 Tholian ships (including photon-armed variants and the Light Tactical Transport plus pallets). 10 ISC ships (including escorts and an LTT). 9 scenarios.

Module R5 (Big Starships for all races)

This is the first of the general-race expansions. It includes several new classes for all races. First are battleships: mega-dreadnaughts with move cost 2 based on the Klingon B-10 from Advanced Missions. There are ``conjectural'' battleships for all the races (except the Orions who get a mega-dreadnaught). These are all patterned closely on the B-10, including the odd two rear-firing heavy weapons.

Heavy Command Cruisers are basically CC's with a few extra power, phasers, and shields. Battle Control Ships are Heavy Battlecruiser variants which carry six fighters and six PF's.

New Heavy Cruisers are move cost 1 heavy cruisers created by expanding the war cruiser design. They are pretty similar to the original heavy cruisers, with less hull and other ``non-essential'' systems.

The line-up, then, is:

Module R6 (New Classes for all Races)

This module provides 95 new warships and 10 new scenarios. It features five entirely new classes for all the races.

Fast Cruisers are the central feature. These are heavy cruiser variants which have half (usu. two) of their heavy weapons replaced by phasers, but with 36 warp power.

Heavy War Cruisers are another radical design. They are expanded War Destroyers, around 110 to 135 BPV (i.e. equivalent to light cruisers) -- but they have special option boxes. They all have 2/3 Move Cost, 24 Warp, 2 rear-firing (RA) option mounts, 4 Non-Weapon Option boxes, 2 fighter boxes (Hydrans have 6), and 4 convertible APR (similar to Non-Weapon Option Boxes).

Mobile Carriers are War Destroyer variants with eight fighters.

Fast Carrier Resupply Ships are generally frigate variants, which carry fighters as cargo, not in bays ready-to-fly. They have limited aegis, and limited ability to launch the fighters they are carrying for self-defense.

Police Flagships: with fewer weapons, but just about everything else a police commissioner could need, including their own special sensors, minesweeping gear, commandoes, GAS shuttles, repair systems, MRS shuttles, and Prime Teams.

In addition, there are a number of miscellaneous ships, including: Fed Heavy Drone Cruiser, Klingon E6 and E7, Romulan RegalHawk, Kzinti Scout-Drone War Destroyer, Gorn Heavy Survey Cruiser, Tholian Heavy Phaser Cruiser, Orion Double Raider Cruiser, Hydran Heavy Survey Cruiser, Andro Ravager War Cruiser, Lyran JagdPanther modular Light Cruiser, WYN Pocket Battlecruiser, ISC Medium Cruiser, LDR Heavy Command Cruiser, Seltorian Carriers, and Jindarian Heavy and Light Strike Cruisers.

The Jindarian strike cruisers are metal-hull ships similar to others.

Module R7 (Dreadnaughts at War)

This module is another expansion with ships for all races, including with six new broad class types: Four ships have on-line previews from ADB's playtest area. Other possible variants were previewed in SFT #9 and #23, including the Romulan MegaHawk (which takes 4 SPH modules), the Fed Diplomatic DN, Klingon C9J, Kzinti Escort DN, Gorn Commando DN, and Lyran Dreadnought Tug.

Module D3: Booms and Saucers

This 32-page book contains SSDs and scenarios for separated Federation Saucers, Klingon Boom Sections, and Neo-Tholian rear hulls.
