Module J (Fighters)
This supplement introduces many new fighters and carriers than the basic game. Fighters are introduced as general units in Advanced Missions, so you can get a taste of them there. In essence, they are simply high-speed shuttles with weapons. In play, they clutter up the mapboard (and often launch a huge number of drones), but they don't require any energy allocation forms or damage allocation rolls. They will, however, completely change the face of fleet battles for you, because they are immensely powerful but dependent on their carrier. The fighters introduced here are primarily drone-armed fighters (of the Federation, Klingons, and Kzinti) or plasma-armed fighters (of the Romulans, Gorn, and ISC). Drone fighters can launch from range-30, and are essentially ways of getting huge numbers of drones on the board at once. Once they launch their drones and guide them in, they are typically cycled back into the carrier for reloading. The big change here is that with the new fighters and carriers, Federation fleets can be just as powerful in massive drone waves as the Klingons and Kzinti are.
Plasma-armed fighters are more difficult to use because they have to be at closer range to be effective. They are basically split between "assault" fighters with a single plasma-F and "superiority" fighters with two plasma-D's.
Module J introduces 4 to 8 new fighter types each for the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Kzinti, Gorn, Tholians, and ISC. It also has SSD's for 36 new starships (carriers and escorts), plus auxiliary carriers (two converted freighter designs used by all races):
The module also includes a new rule section for ``dogfighting'' between fighters, where opposing fighters pair off within a hex and exchange fire every quarter turn. It also has complete rules on fighter loading and carrier operations.
