(R??.1) PSYLONIAN BACKGROUND
The Psylonians are a humanoid race once living as subjects to the
Klingon Empire near the Kizinti-Klingon border. During the Third
Klingo-Kizinti war the Psylonian home planet was nearly destroyed in a
Kizinti attack. The Klingon Empire believed all inhabitants had
been killed and quickly forgot about their former subjects as the war
raged on. In fact about 10% of the Psylonian population survived
the Kizinti drone bombardment by seeking shelter in deep
bunkers. Using the opportunity to escape their Klingon
oppressors, the Psylonians assembled the remaining population into
transport ships and left the dying planet in search of a new home
world, taking with them Kizinti drone technology leftover from the war
zone.
The transport ships eventually found a habitable
planet in a virtually unknown sector just outside of Klingon territory
near the Tholian Holdfast. The planet proved to be rich in a
rare metal that the Psylonians used to build their ships. This
metal is ultra-dense providing for excellent armor at the expense of
added weight to Psylonian warships, which are all based the hulls from
the transport ships used to escape from Klingon territory. The
Defectors spent a few years upgrading their drone technology until
they had perfected it. (All Psylonian ships use C-Racks). This
new minor power still lacked any sort of heavy weapon other than
drones, but changed that after a few encounters with Tholian explorers
who had ventured outside the Holdfast. Although the Psylonians
lost half of their fleet in the Psylonian-Tholian skirmishes (they
only had 6 ships to begin with) they managed to capture a Tholian
cruiser and exploit some of it's technology.
The Web Devices were found to be of an extremely
alien technology and could not be reproduced, but the brilliant
scientists of the Psylonians were able to use the Web Caster as a
working Web Fist. The Psylonians then promptly left the Tholians
alone, as they didn't wish to risk getting crushed by a fleet that
largely outnumbered them. After a few more years the Defectors
began to venture along the edge of the galaxy, staying away from the
Tholians, and having occasional incidents with the Klingons (who
weren't willing to commit any amount of serious resistance to
Psylonian presence). Eventually the Psylonians came into contact
with an aggressive race of intergalactic (?) origin known as the
Daetharians. Although Psylonian vessels were superior in
performance to the Daetharians, the occasional lost battle was
devastating as the Defectors had very few ships to begin with.
After design improvements in Daetharian ships began to even out
the odds, the Psylonians decided it was best to not interfere with the
mysterious aliens.
Increased galactic tension during the General War
forced the Psylonians to produce warships in larger numbers in case of
attack, although in fact most major powers were unaware of the
Defectors existence, and of the few that have encountered them none
know the location of their adopted home world.
(R??.R0) PSYLONIAN FLEET REFITS
None known. While the defectors briefly used A-Racks on their warships, these were quickly abandoned due to the lack of any other heavy weapons.
PSYLONIAN WARSHIPS
(R??.2) SHC STRONG ARM HEAVY CRUISER: The largest cruiser ever built by the Psylonians, this ship saw limited production in the year leading up to the General War. One was eventually converted to a CVA to provide fighter support for the Defector fleet.
(R??.3) GLC GRUNT LIGHT CRUISER: The workhorse of the Psylonian fleet, this was the first ship produced after encountering the Tholians. Designed on an old cruiser hull, the GLC added additional sections to accommodate the Web Fists.
(R??.4) DDA ARCHER DESTROYER: Fearing a rapid depletion of the rare metals on the new Psylonian planet, the defector government ordered a decrease in production of the GLC and replaced it with the DDA on the production schedule. Being cheaper and a lower drain on already lacking resources, the DDA provided the Psylonians with an adequate defense vessel that wouldn't be much of a loss if destroyed. GLCs were reintroduced to the shipyards after the start of the General War.
(R??.5) CVAC CAVALRY HEAVY CARRIER: Built on the hull of a converted SHC, the CVAC fulfilled the Psylonian need for additional firepower in case of attack during the General War. Numerous attempts at fighter designs proved to be inadequate until the invention of the P-3's which could carry 4 type-I drones. 10 of these fighters were assigned to the Cavalry. Due to the expense and unavailability of the SHC only one CVAC was ever produced.
(R??.6) DDE WINGMAN CARRIER ESCORT: With the production of the CVAC, the Psylonians saw the need for escort vessels. The DDA was converted for this role. The Wingman has ready racks for fighters but very rarely carried any, as these spaces were intended to help re-arm fighters based off the CVAC in battle.
